Attack on Afghan government outpost kills 10

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Gunmen attacked an outpost of a government-sponsored militia in western Afghanistan and killed 10 members of the security force, officials said Thursday.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militants armed with assault rifles stormed the outpost of the militia known as the Afghan Local Police late Wednesday in Farah province's Khaki Safed district, said provincial police chief Shamsul Rahman Zahid.

They shot a guard who was posted outside, then pushed into the compound and opened fire on those inside, said Abdul Khaliq Noorzai, the district administrator.

Another two militia members were dragged outside and shot dead, said Zahid. Four militiamen survived the attack, he said.

The Afghan Local Police are a force created with the help of the American military. They have been described as an armed neighborhood watch. The members come from the local community and receive a small government salary to man checkpoints and oversee security in their area. They receive a few weeks of training before starting the work.

The attacks appear to be part of an increase in violence at the beginning of the spring fighting season. During the harsh Afghan winter, snow often blocks roads and fighting dies down.

The death toll from a separate attack Wednesday by a Taliban suicide bomber on a motorcycle rose Thursday to 13, including three American soldiers, according to NATO and U.S. forces. Previously the toll was reported to be at least 10.

The Taliban are targeting Afghan and NATO security forces as they fight to assert their power and undermine U.S. efforts to try to build up the Afghan military, which will take the lead in combat responsibility over the next couple of years.

He said it was too soon to be specific about the auction?s financial ramifications. Closings on many of the real estate purchases spawned by the auction have not occurred.

About 20 homes and hundreds of lots were sold.

?We are still working through the deals,? he said. ?I am glad we moved inventory.?

One model home for a development sold for 24.2 percent less than its $356,000 list price. The biggest discount, 48 percent, was obtained by the buyer of a Spring Township home listed at $332,000.

The fact that the auction prices were discounted but not rock bottom ? selling for perhaps two-thirds off ? was a positive thing for the market, according to Christian D. Malesic, executive officer of the Home Builders Association of Berks County.

?This tells us that we are not going down,? Malesic said. ?We are seeing that we are not going negative.?

Greth is president and sole shareholder of Greth Homes and Greth Development Group. He has built nearly 2,000 homes in four decades in the building industry.

He was prompted to schedule the auction when the collapse of the housing industry caused him to accumulate a massive amount of unsold property on which he had to pay taxes and debt, while collecting little in home-sales revenue.

?The activity in the last five weeks has visibly been much better than last year during the same time frame,? he said. ?More calls coming in. More showings. More buyers actually looking to buy real estate.?

At the Home Builders Association, even if there has not been a surge in new home construction, Malesic said, members are seeing more money flowing into existing-home renovation projects such as the installation of new carpeting, new tile or new doors.

Millions of patients benefit from opioids such as morphine and codeine, but the pain relief they provide often comes with intense itching. In some cases, the irritation is so bad that patients will opt to cut back on painkillers. Now a study in the October 14 issue of Cell has found a possible explanation?the first step to creating drugs that will not make patients choose between experiencing itchiness and pain.

Until recently, many experts had assumed that itching from opioids was unavoidable because it is a common side effect of drugs that interact with the nervous system. The brain has four main types of receptors that respond to opioids, and every type has many structural variants, called isoforms. Most opioids are nonspecific, which means they bind to all the isoforms. This leads to powerful pain relief, although scientists do not know exactly why.

In the new research, a team led by itch researcher Zhou-Feng Chen of Washington University in St. Louis showed that only one opioid receptor isoform is responsible for itching?and it is not involved in pain. Mice bred to have fewer of these particular receptors did not scratch themselves when given an opioid, but they did exhibit the telltale mouse signs of pain relief, such as less flinching when researchers flicked their tails.

Now that scientists know that pain relief and itching can be decoupled, they will try to make itch-free opioid drugs a reality.
