China refuses to criticize Iran by name (AP)

BEIJING ? China has refused to criticize Iran by name for the attack on British diplomatic compounds in Tehran but says the dignity of diplomatic missions should be protected.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei refused Wednesday to mention Iran when asked for comment on the attack.

Hong would say only that "China always maintains that the security and dignity of diplomats and diplomatic institutions should be safeguarded and protected."

He said "the relevant action runs counter to international law and basic norms of international relations and should be handled appropriately."

Hard-line Iranian protesters stormed the British compounds Tuesday. They hauled down the British flag, torched an embassy vehicle and pelted buildings with petrol bombs.

Active 2011 Hurricane Season Comes to an End (LiveScience.com)

The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season was forecast to be a doozy and it delivered.

The season officially ends tomorrow (Nov. 30) and its legacy includes 19 tropical storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes ? including the devastating Hurricane Irene, the only hurricane to strike the United States this year. Irene was the first U.S.-land-falling hurricane in three years. Its billion-dollar damage brought the United States back to the reality of hurricanes after years of quiet.

"Irene reminded us that the Northeast can and does get hit byhurricanes," said Jeff Weber, an atmospheric scientist at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

Active trend

The 2011 season continued a trend of active hurricane seasons that began in 1995, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Tropical storms came in with the third-highest total, at 19 (tied with 1887, 1995 and 2010), since records began, in 1851. An average season has 11 tropical storms.?[See a video of the season's storms.]

The seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale) that developed this year number only slightly above the averages of six and two,?respectively.

The 2011 season affected the Mid-Atlantic more than the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Irene, the first hurricane to hit the United States since Ike hit Texas in 2008, socked the East Coast. The storm caused $7 billion in damage and became the worst tropical cyclone ?to strike the Northeast since Hurricane Bob in 1991. Tropical cyclone is the generic term for tropical storms and hurricanes.

Irene inundated New York and Connecticut with water ? up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) in some places. Irene was blamed for 46 deaths across 13 states.

As bad as the damage was, things could have been worse. Modern storm-tracking technology allowed NOAA forecasters to accurately map Irene's path for four days before its landfall Aug. 27, near Cape Lookout, N.C., allowing the population of the Outer Banks to evacuate. Irene was a major storm for a brief period, but it weakened to a Category 1 storm and so was not a major hurricane at landfall.

"We have now gone six years ? since Wilma in 2005 ? without a?major hurricane making U.S. landfall," said Phil Klotzbach, an atmospheric scientist and hurricane forecaster at Colorado State University.

Few Gulf storms

Since 1878, when land-falling hurricane records begin, the 2006-2011 span is the longest stretch without a major hurricane hitting the United States, Klotzbach told OurAmazingPlanet.

While the East Coast was soaked by storms, the dearth of Gulf storms added tothe Texas drought.

One storm that did hit the Gulf was Tropical Storm Lee, which made landfall in central Louisiana. Lee spawned 38 tornadoes, the second most on record for a tropical storm.

Most storms were turned away from the United States by an anomalous trough of low pressure along the East?Coast, "which helped steer storms moving towards the?U.S. coast back out to sea before they could make U.S. landfall," Klotzbach said.

$5000 grant supports Meals on Wheels for pets ? Bangor Daily News

WINSLOW, Maine ? Carlene Shank already had a dog and a cat when her friend passed away recently and left her another dog to care for.

Making sure her friend?s dog was taken care of was an easy decision for Shank, even though she was unsure whether she would be able to afford the food. Then she noticed a flier at the Spectrum Generations Center in Waterville advertising something called AniMeals, a sort of Meals on Wheels for pets.

?It makes a big difference once you?re retired and on a fixed income,? said Shank. ?I?ve got one dog who eats you out of house and home, so [AniMeals is] a big help.?

According to Lynda Johnson, who has run AniMeals out of the Spectrum Generations Cohen Center in Hallowell for the past 8 years, there are a total of about 90 pets being served in the Hallowell and Waterville areas. The food is distributed by an already existing network of Meals on Wheels drivers who deliver sustenance to some 400 senior citizens and others who are confined to their homes by circumstance.

Earlier this month, the AniMeals program received a major boost in the form of a $5,000 grant from the Banfield Charitable Trust, which through its Seasons of Suppers program has a long history of funding for pets and humans across the country. The trust has awarded more than $350,000 in grant money to support pet food programs. The recent grant in Maine was split evenly between the 8-year-old program in Hallowell and a similar program in the Waterville area that is just a few months old but already flooded with pets to feed.

?Our clients love the AniMeals program because it helps them with their budgets,? said Johnson. ?All of this money from the Banfield Charitable Trust is going right to food, and maybe a container or two to keep it in.?

Users of the program receive about two pounds of dry dog or cat food per week, depending on the number of pets they have. The program has occasionally served other pets, such as birds, but that is rare, said Johnson. Just like Meals on Wheels, Johnson said she knows AniMeals is a resounding success because of the ease with which she collects donations. There is also no waiting list for either program, which is a point of pride for the program.

?We?re having good luck, which is a good thing because it does cost a lot of money,? said Johnson. Among the businesses who have supported the program are Pet Life, Pine Tree Veterinarians, Tractor Supply and the Riverview Psychiatric Center. Johnson said she buys pet food from a variety of local retailers, many of whom usually pitch in a little extra.

The rationale behind the program is making sure people who don?t have a lot don?t have to let go of their pets for lack of money.

?If you?re on Meals on Wheels, you?re already in a scary place anyway,? said Johnson. ?Anyone who?s on that program qualifies for AniMeals. I don?t look at how much money they make.?

Johnson said the AniMeals program in the Hallowell area was among the first of its kind in Maine, though it has been spreading.

According to Shank, the pet food distributed by the program is of just as high quality as the people food distributed by Meals on Wheels.

?Whatever kind of food they?re buying, the animals love it,? she said. ?We?re all happy here.?

Obama, EU leaders meet amid European debt concerns (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama and European Union leaders are meeting at the White House amid financial instability in Europe that could threaten the U.S. economy.

The day-long summit comes as analysts warn that the euro could be days away from collapsing. The U.S. maintains that Europe has the capacity to address its financial woes, but officials acknowledge that economic problems in Europe can negatively impact the U.S.

The White House says other topics on the agenda at the U.S.-E.U. summit include supporting democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, cooperation on counterterrorism and transatlantic law enforcement, and Iran.

The European Union is being representing in the meetings with Obama by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, and High Representative Catherine Ashton.

Tokyo retains title as Michelin's gourmet capital (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Tokyo retained the title of the world's gourmet capital on Tuesday, when the Michelin guide awarded it more stars than any other city for the fifth year in a row.

Tokyo restaurants also won more top awards than last year with 16 given the three-star rating, which Michelin defines as "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey." That is two more than last year and compares with 10 for Paris.

Fourteen of Tokyo's top spots serve Japanese cuisine and two French.

In the 2012 edition of the Michelin restaurant guide for Japan's capital, Yokohama and the adjacent coastal area of Shonan launched on Tuesday, Tokyo sushi restaurant "Yoshitake" shot to the top ranking in its first listing.

Restaurant "Koan" in the Shonan area covered for the first time also joined the ranking with three stars, bringing the total three-star haul of the Tokyo-Yokohama-Shonan area to 17.

Tokyo's "Ryugin" was promoted from two to three stars. A Korean restaurant in Tokyo, "Moranbong" joined the list with two stars, becoming the highest-ranked Korean restaurant in the world.

"In Japan most people think of barbecued beef as the main dish for Korean cuisine but it is not. That's something Koreans living in Japan started after the World War Two," said Jon Pyong Ryol, president of Moranbong, also a maker of popular Korean barbecue sauce sold in supermarkets.

"We serve traditional court dishes. And for us winning the Michelin stars is a recognition that authentic Korean food has been recognized in Japan."

Among 247 starred Tokyo restaurants, 52 received two stars and 179 received one star. By comparison, Paris has only 70 starred restaurants in the guide published by the French tire maker.

The selection features a range of styles of Japanese dining from fugu -- puffer fish that can be lethal if improperly prepared -- sushi and tempura to "salaryman" favorites such as soba buckwheat noodles and yakitori grilled chicken skewers.

The awards are highly respected in Japan, one of the world's most food-obsessed nations and the guide's latest edition marks continued expansion of Japan's coverage.

"Eventually we want to cover all Japan," said Tetsu Morita, director of Nihon Michelin Tire.

Tokyo's three-star Japanese restaurants are Araki, Azabu Yukimura, Esaki, Hamadaya, Ishikawa, Kanda, Koju, Ryugin, 7chome Kyoboshi, Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten, Sushi Mizutani, Sushi Saito, Sushi Yoshitake and Usukifugu Yamadaya. The French restaurants are Joel Robuchon and Quintessence.

Koju's chef Tooru Okuda became the only chef in Japan with five stars after his new restaurant "Ginza Okuda" opened in August won two stars.

Okuda lost his relatives in Sendai city when the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami hit Japan's northeast on March 11 and

said sourcing ingredients from there was one way of helping the disaster-struck area.

"I want to support the areas that were affected by the earthquake and I want to use ingredients from the region," he said. Okuda added that even though ingredients were coming from the region that hosts the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant it was not a concern if it was tested for radiation levels.

"As long as those foods meet government standards I will use them for my cooking."

In Yokohama, Japanese restaurants Chiso Kimura, Masagosaryo and Sugai earned two stars, and 14 earned one. Two restaurants in Shonan earned two stars and 26 one star.

In a separate edition for Japan's Kansai region published last month, centered on Osaka and the ancient capital of Kyoto, 15 restaurants garnered three-star ratings.

The first Michelin restaurant guide, aimed at drivers in the early days of motoring, was published by the tire company in 1900, and the star rating system was introduced in the 1920s.

Insert Coin: Prototype peripherals incorporate no moving parts, multitouch functionality and freaking lasers

When in doubt, strip out the moving parts and see what you wind up with. This is the idea inventor Jason Giddings is following as he turns to Kickstarter to help fund the prototype creation for a glass keyboard and mouse, both sporting multitouch functionality. The design uses the same biometric systems that currently capture fingerprints on assorted trackpads and keyboards, and uses a technique known as Frustrated Total Internal Reflection -- which incorporates a series of LEDs on the bottom of a device -- to bounce infrared light beams around the inside of the glass. This process is interrupted when a finger touches the glass, wherein a simple embedded camera captures the event, processes where the keystroke, mouse click or gesture took place and relays the signal to the computer.

iTether app skirts carrier tethering plans, sets up shop in iOS App Store

Ready to share your iPhone's data plan with your laptop without springing for the requisite tethering plan? No, it's not another brightly colored, data smuggling easter egg, it's iTether, a USB tethering app that has apparently made its way through Apple's approval process. The data sharing newcomer promises to pipe your existing data plan to your PC via a companion desktop application. If history is anything to go by, this $15 app won't be available for long, so you'd better get while the getting's good -- it seems that high demand has already taken Tether's website down.
