How Reddit landed Obama interview -- and stole the GOP's thunder

News-sharing website Reddit may be called "the front page of the Internet" for its popularity among the technorati, but a lot of mainstream folks may not have been familiar with the San Francisco-based site until this week.

That's when the Chatter-in-Chief, President Barack Obama, made a surprise appearance on the site's popular "Ask me Anything" feature.

Previous installations have included movie stars like Molly Ringwald, TV stars like Larry King and political types ranging from faux conservative Stephen Colbert to real conservative Ron Paul. But Obama was the biggest name by a factor of 10, as tech types like to say.

"Tons of people who were on Reddit have requested that the president do an IAmA," said general manager Erik Martin, using the site's shorthand for the feature.

Martin said Reddit's co-founder, political activist Alexis Ohanian, worked closely with Obama's people to arrange the forum. It began with the simple message: "Hi, I'm Barack Obama, President of the United States. Ask me anything."

Obama spent about a half-hour fielding questions that ranged from "What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics?" to "What's the recipe for the White House's beer?"

"Redditors," as the site's users are called, urged him to help relieve student debt and boost funding for the space program. (The president called the latter "a big priority," though he didn't commit to a dollar figure.)

Obama has historically taken great pains to show he's hip to the Internet, with a town hall forum on Twitter last year and a live video chat on Facebook.

Still, it's fair to say both those social networking sites had far more name recognition than Reddit does. Martin acknowledged that all the attention might bring new users to the site, which offers forums on such things as world news, sports and gluten-free cooking.

Ohanian and classmate Steve Huffman founded Reddit in 2005 after graduating from the University of Virginia. With funding from Mountain View tech incubator Y Combinator, they launched a sort of virtual bulletin board where people could post links to stories they'd read online ("read it" -- get it?).

Within a year, Reddit had been snapped up by media giant Advance Publications, which also owns magazines such as Wired, The New Yorker and Vogue. Today, the site draws nearly 40 million unique visitors a month.

Like short-lived competitor Digg, Reddit also lets users vote a given news story up or down. Stories with the most votes get the best positioning on the site.

Obama's chat garnered nearly a half-million votes. And true to these partisan times, they were narrowly divided between "up" and "down" votes.

Larry Sabato, a political-science professor at the University of Virginia, said Obama was savvy to seize the media spotlight as the rival Republican Party held its nominating convention in Florida.

"Obama needs to pump up enthusiasm among 18- to 29-year-olds," Sabato said, noting that Reddit users skew disproportionately young. "In politics, as in hunting, you go where the ducks are."

There were so many ducks flocking during Wednesday's chat, in fact, that Reddit slowed to a virtual standstill. While the most popular "Ask me Anything" chats may garner 1 million page views over the course of a month, Martin said, Obama's got 3.5 million on the first day.

Martin said that while his engineers scrambled to clear the digital bottlenecks, most users saw a cached version of the site that showed the conversation but didn't allow them to log in or participate.

"We're not a static website," he said. "So in terms of load, it gets pretty complex."

Condoleezza Rice hits Obama on foreign policy in RNC speech

Condoleezza Rice never addressed President Obama by name, but the former secretary of state delivered a sharp rejection of his foreign policy tonight, charging that the White House had forsaken past and potential allies, leaving the world to wonder, "Where does America stand?"

"When our friends and our foes, alike, do not know the answer to that question," she told the Republican National Convention, "the world is a chaotic and dangerous place."

Rice picked up on a theme laid out earlier tonight by Sen. John McCain who warned that "if America doesn't lead, our adversaries will, and the world will grow darker, poorer and much more dangerous." Rice criticized the president for taking a backseat to NATO during the battle for Libya and not doing more to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

"We cannot be reluctant to lead," Rice told fellow Republicans, who welcomed her to the stage with enthusiastic applause. "And you cannot lead from behind. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan understand this reality, that our leadership abroad and our well-being at home are inextricably linked."

"Our adversaries must have no reason to doubt our resolve because peace really does come through strength," said Rice, who was secretary of state in President George W. Bush's administration.

Turning to concerns that a growing deficit could undermine American influence abroad, she focused on China.

"Just consider this," she said. "The United States has ratified only three trade agreements in the last few years and those were negotiated in the Bush administration. China has signed 15 free trade agreements and is in the progress of negotiating as many as 18 more. Sadly we are abandoning the field of free and fair trade, and it will come back to haunt us."

Working without a Teleprompter, Rice occasionally looked down at her notes, but mostly drove home her points with a fierce right hand.

And her speech did not stop at the shoreline as she touched on domestic issues, lines that won her some of her evening's most raucous applause.

"On a personal note, a little girl grows up in Jim Crow Birmingham, the most segregated big city in America," Rice said, talking about her childhood in Alabama. "Her parents can't take her to a movie theater or a restaurant, but they make her believe that even though she can't have a hamburger at the Woolworth's lunch counter she can be president of the United States -- and she becomes the Secretary of State."

That dream, she said was in doubt, as economic dislocation crushes opportunity in areas hardest hit by the slow recovery.

"Your greatest ally in controlling your response to your circumstance is in a quality education," Rice said. "Today, when I can look at your zip code and can tell whether you are going to get a good education. Can I really say that it doesn't matter where you came from? It matters where you are going. The crisis in K-12 education is a threat to the very fabric who we are."

It is an issue Rice knows well from her time as provost at Stanford University, which she returned to in 2010 to work as a professor.

Google Now update brings sports, movies, storm warnings

4 hrs.

If you're lucky enough to have a phone running the latest version of Android, an update to Google Now is rolling out Wednesday?that lets you check movie times, receive?emergency alerts?and get the latest scores from the ballgame.

The Google Now service gives personalized capsule responses to common queries about current and local events. The feature was announced in June, but there are still new "cards" (as the special search results are called) being developed.

The latest update brings some extremely practical new cards to Android 4.1 users. One card brings up local movie showtimes, which is probably what you're looking for if you search for a theater or film on your phone. Another (just in time for Isaac) allows emergency messages like storm warnings and earthquake alerts to be pushed to your phone.

And to the delight of many sports fans, another card lets you keep up to date with any of 140 soccer, football, hockey and baseball teams. You can select your favorites from a list or search for them, and can then choose to receive news?before, during?or after games (or all three).

If you're running Android 4.1, you can download the improved?app via the Google?Play Store, or very possibly your phone has already detected that the update is ready and will download it automatically.

Zohreh Homel Azimi Real Estate Licence Suspended | Stuff.co.nz

An Auckland real estate agent has had her licence suspended pending the outcome of mortgage fraud charges.

Zohreh Homel Azimi is charged with misconduct under the Real Estate Agents Act for allegedly allowing a fraudulent loan application to be made in her name to KiwiBank to buy a house in New Lynn, west Auckland.

She is also charged with misconduct over her alleged part in a fraudulent mortgage scheme involving four other Auckland properties.

The Real Estate Agents Authority claims that between 2007 and 2011 Azimi listed, sold, re-listed and sold the properties again knowing that she was doing so as part of the fraudulent arrangement.

The properties were in various parts of the city - in Sunnyhills, east Auckland, Paihia Road in One Tree Hill, and two homes next door to each other in Hillsborough Road, Waikowhai.

The Real Estate Agents Disciplinary Tribunal gave notice last month that Azimi faced suspension because of the charges against her.

"We do consider that the evidence before us... discloses serious wrongdoing such that there is a serious risk to the public if Ms Azimi remains able to continue to practice as a real estate agent pending the outcome of the charges," it said.

She had 10 working days to respond but did not do so, and as of yesterday has had her licence suspended for nine months or until the hearing of the charges.

Lindsay Lohan cleared in alleged theft

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Prosecutors on Tuesday cleared actress Lindsay Lohan of any involvement in an alleged theft of some $100,000 worth of property from a Hollywood Hills home where she recently stayed, citing insufficient evidence.

Lohan, 26, was questioned by police after the home's owner named her in connection with the alleged theft. But after investigators finished their probe, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Deborah L. Kranze declined to charge anyone, including the actress and an assistant who was with her.

"We do not have sufficient evidence to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt," Kranze wrote in evaluating the case.

Celebrity website TMZ.com reported last week that the troubled actress and her assistant were guests at the home during an all-night party and the owner had later reported the theft of stolen jewelry, including watches.

The Los Angeles Times said on Tuesday that the owner was no longer cooperating with the investigation.

"Lindsay is glad this matter has been cleared up so she can focus on her upcoming projects. It is unfortunate that many media outlets were quick to point fingers and jump to conclusions without having all the facts," Lohan's spokesman said in a statement.

Lohan was released from formal probation in March over charges in 2007 of drunk driving and cocaine possession. Recently she has had guest roles on TV sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live," a cameo appearance on "Glee" and has filmed the TV movie "Liz & Dick."

The actress is still on informal probation until 2014 in connection with a jewelry theft case last year. If charges had been brought in the latest incident, officials could have revoked her probation and sent her to jail.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: what's changed?

Samsung Galaxy Note II what's changed

It's hard to believe that the word "phablet" has now been in our vocabulary for exactly a year. Perhaps even more difficult to believe is that it's still in our lexicon, but it doesn't look like the term is going anywhere anytime soon. Today, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note II, a followup to the company's S-Pen equipped sleeper hit introduced at last year's IFA. But what does the sequel have that the original doesn't? Head below with us as we take a closer look at how the two devices compare.

Note: We'll continue filling out the chart as details surface.

Beneath Antarctic ice, a potent greenhouse gas?

A study published Wednesday suggests that the Antarctic Ice Sheet holds vast amounts of methane, which, if released during a thaw, could accelerate global warming.??

Large volumes of the greenhouse gas methane could have been produced under the Antarctic Ice Sheet over millions of years, which could add to global warming if released into the atmosphere by a thaw, a study said on Wednesday.

Scientists from the universities of Bristol, Utrecht, California and Alberta simulated the accumulation of methane in Antarctic sedimentary basins using models and calculations.

They found it was likely there were micro-organisms there that would have been able to convert the ice sheet's large deposits of organic carbon into the potent gas.

If present, methane would most likely be trapped under the ice.

But it could be released into the atmosphere as rising global temperatures melt the ice sheet, fuelling even more global warming, the scientists said in the paper published in the journal Nature.

"The Antarctic Ice Sheet could constitute a previously neglected component of the global methane hydrate inventory although significant uncertainty exists," the scientists said.

Methane stays in the atmosphere for up to 15 years. Levels have been on the rise over the past few years, following a period of stability since 1998.

The gas is normally trapped as "methane hydrate" in sediments under a seabed. Methane hydrate is a form of water ice containing a large amount of methane which is usually stable.

As temperatures rise, the hydrate breaks down and methane is released from the sea bed, mostly dissolving into the seawater.

But if trapped methane broke sea surfaces and escaped into the atmosphere, it would intensify global warming.

Scientists have already identified thousands of sites in the Arctic where methane is bubbling into the atmosphere but the potential for methane formation under the Antarctic Ice Sheet has been less well studied.

Conditions under the Antarctic Ice Sheet seem capable of producing methane as the water is oxygen-depleted, hosts micro-organisms and contains significant reservoirs of organic carbon, Wednesday's study said.

"We calculate that the sub-Antarctic hydrate inventory could be of the same order of magnitude as that of recent estimates made for Arctic permafrost."

In 2008, American and Russian experts estimated that 0.5 megatonnes of methane are released per year and at least 1,400 gigatonnes of carbon is trapped as methane and methane hydrates under the Arctic permafrost.

But up to 50 gigatonnes of hydrate storage could be released at any time, which would increase the methane content of the Earth's atmosphere by a factor of 12, they warned.

Renowned pianist Van Cliburn diagnosed with cancer

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Renowned classical pianist Van Cliburn has been diagnosed with advanced bone cancer and is resting comfortably at his Texas home, his publicist said Monday.

The 78-year-old Cliburn is under excellent care and his spirits are high, said longtime friend and publicist Mary Lou Falcone.

Cliburn skyrocketed to fame in 1958 when he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at age 23. He triumphantly returned to a New York ticker tape parade, the only one ever for a classical musician, and a Time magazine cover proclaimed him "The Texan Who Conquered Russia."

In the years that followed, Cliburn's popularity soared, and the young man from the small east Texas town of Kilgore sold out concerts, broke record sales, caused riots when spotted in public and even prompted an Elvis Presley fan club to change its name to his.

But he tired of years of performing mainly the same pieces that made him famous ? such as Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1," which had sealed his Moscow win ? and took a sabbatical in 1978, feeling emotionally drained from nonstop touring. Cliburn later moved from New York to Fort Worth, where he currently lives and where he remained active in the arts and social scenes. He began playing publicly again in the late 1980s.

Until only recently, Cliburn practiced daily and performed limited engagements.

He has performed for every president since Harry Truman, and for years has devoted his time to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Founded by Fort Worth music teachers in 1962, it's held every four years and considered among the world's premier piano competitions.

Cliburn won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003.

He was already an accomplished pianist before winning the 1958 competition in Moscow. He started taking piano lessons from his mother at age 3, then debuted with the Houston Symphony Orchestra at age 12. He studied at Juilliard, won the famed Leventritt Competition and performed with several orchestras across the country ? including the New York Philharmonic.

Bad Fiction from Damascus ?Gay Girl? | Al Akhbar English

In Spring 2011, ?Amina Arraf,? the blogger behind A Gay Girl in Damascus, was testing the waters for a book deal. Arraf sent chapters of a draft autobiography to the writer Minal Hajratwala and asked if she could pass it on to publishers. Amid vast amounts of attention from the Western media, Arraf had become the archetype of a liberal, anti-regime figure as Damascus witnessed some of its first protests. A book deal seemed inevitable.

Then, in June, Arraf was kidnapped by Syrian pro-government forces. As a campaign was launched to Free Amina, some journalists began to question if anyone had actually met her. Nobody had. We now know that Arraf was not a lesbian in Damascus, but actually 40-year-old American Tom MacMaster living in Scotland.

He muses, ?If I could convince people of an invented identity, I would be able to hone my literary skills.?MacMaster didn?t admit this freely. The process of his unraveling was like pulling teeth. Then, when he finally came clean, he unleashed a tide of equivocations for his despicable actions: the blog was just him developing characters for his fiction writing; it was to ?illuminate? events in Syria for a ?western audience,? etc. It would?ve seemed that, ethically speaking, any potential book deal was dead.

Yet on 25 August 2012, MacMaster revived ? and then quickly retracted ? those book plans. Tom MacMaster is now T.J. MacMaster, author of A Gay Girl in Damascus. The e-book was temporarily available for a whopping $19.99 as an Amazon e-book purchase (a price that tops even reputable authors? new e-book releases by a few dollars). The e-book, as well as the blog post announcing its arrival, has since been removed, with MacMaster claiming on his personal blog that he is waiting for the ?clear from my legal counsel.?

Until its removal, the blurb for A Gay Girl in Damascus on Amazon featured praise from the Guardian that described the blog as ?brutally honest, poking at subjects long considered taboo in Arab culture.? This was an assessment before the hoax was exposed, but MacMaster didn?t bother to clarify that in the description. It continued:

?The primary viewpoint character, though, was fictional yet that did not prevent thousands from following the blog. Now, with an afterword that, for the first time, reveals the real story behind the blog, the political commentary, poetry, narrative tales and more are available.?

Given MacMaster?s tone on his blog, the only thing that stands in the way of him profiting off A Gay Girl in Damascus is his lawyer. If MacMaster had a sense of decency, or was even mildly apologetic, he?d shelve his publishing plans, but this seems unlikely; like defamed celebrities and outmoded reality TV stars, once your being is synonymous with public disgust and outcry, profiting off that disgrace is really the only thing you have left.

With this, MacMaster has no qualms using the Gay Girl hoax as his launching point for a career in fiction. He now has two self-published e-books available on Amazon. One is a fantasy novel, The Conspiracy of the Gods, which he ?jokingly? describes as ?more Tolstoy than Tolkien.? His second novel is Children of Nowhere, a spy novel set in the Middle East and Russia. The protagonist of the latter is also named Tom, leading MacMaster to write on his blog that there ?are quite a few similarities between the narrator and myself,? but that he ?won?t pretend that it is anything like autobiographical.?

On his blog, he?s simultaneously deprecating and congratulatory about his attempts at fiction. He writes that some of his fiction is ?at least readable and might capture the interest of a reader or two,? but that in the past he has been ?too vain to think that my writings should be submitted anywhere except to the most prestigious publications and the biggest publishing houses.?

Most are probably not up to the task of reading the fiction of someone widely regarded as a fraud, nor allow him to profit from it. Others might say that MacMaster should quietly sink back into his hole, that even continuing to talk about him is feeding his ego and giving him publicity for his books. But, nevertheless, curiosity won out ? it?s hard to look away from a train wreck. I signed up for a trial of Amazon Prime to get access to the e-books for free, but unfortunately, a minor confusion led to my accidental purchase of Children of Nowhere for $9.99.

The only thing I could take from the book is that, as hinted by the Gay Girl blog, MacMaster is desperate to inhabit other lives that are more interesting than his own.The book begins by introducing the child Tom Jarvis, son of a NY Times journalist and AUB professor who have settled in Beirut during the civil war (?Snow-ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon, just like a dream?). Tom is torn between his ?Arab? upbringing when his mother and father split and he is forced to move to Ohio with the former. This gives way to a line that underscores the desperately worldly sentiments of the book: ?We were Beirutis first.?

The rest of the book centers around Tom?s father?s mysterious ?death? in Peshawar, setting Tom on an eventual mission to track him down and discover his true identity, which, surely is more interesting than being a mere American.

Tom resents his ?Middle American life? and daydreams about his ?Beiruti? roots, imagining that ?one of the militias was about to come, maybe Jebha or Amal or PSP...They?d blow up my school, kill my stepbrother and sister and free me from my oppressors. Then, we?d hijack a plane together and fly ourselves home.?

When Tom is asked what he wants to be when he grows up, he responds, ?I would be a mujahedeen and go rescue my father before I became a Martyr.? When Tom is taken to a psychologist, they tell him that he has PTSD, but nevertheless is a ?genius.? Surprise.

Tom goes from being a rebellious teen who longs to be a part of Khomeini?s revolution to a college student determined to be a ?a literary star.? He works at a convenience store where he takes on the personality of ?Tomas Ivanevitch Kasparov? to ?test ideas for fiction.? He muses, ?If I could convince people of an invented identity, I would be able to hone my literary skills.?

MacMaster has no qualms using the Gay Girl hoax as his launching point for a career in fiction. He now has two self-published e-books available on Amazon. One is a fantasy novel, 'The Conspiracy of the Gods' and the other, 'Children of Nowhere', is a spy novel set in the Middle East and Russia.

The set-up at this point is transparent. MacMaster inserts numerous hints that protagonist Tom will give insight into the ?real? MacMaster, specifically that he?s a compulsive liar who takes on other identities to help his ?fiction.? Sprinkling fiction with autobiographical details is nothing new, but coming from MacMaster it seems a sad act of narcissism ? a way to suggest that deep down he?s a conflicted ?genius? like his protagonist. Yet in the course of the narrative, the details of the protagonist Tom?s inner world point to neither a tortured, nor compelling character, but someone hopelessly bent on appearing world-weary.

What to this point had been an intelligible yet boring narrative starts to get confusing. When Tom travels to Russia to track his father down, his character does an about-face and mutates into some cosmopolitan hard-ass: ?I am a spiteful man, bitter beyond my years. I am an unpleasant man and my liver is probably diseased. I don?t know anything about it and I don?t care.?

He announces that this book is an ?indictment of the Moral Bankruptcy of Post-Cold War Western Capitalism,? then recants, ?But that would be a load of shit. Actually, the main point of the book is that you buy it and make me rich.? There are countless instances in the book where MacMaster writes one thing and then immediately disavows it. Unlike other interesting ?unreliable? narrators in good works of fiction, this character fumbles through the complicated characteristics assigned to him.

As MacMaster peddles his Gay Girl book, he?s sadly reinserting his voice into a sphere where the actual voices of gays, lesbians, and transgendered are consistently shut out. It deteriorates from here when he goes on for, literally, several pages talking about cocaine: ?And if you, dear reader, have got a problem drinking jack or smoking crack or shooting smack, hey, get it in line. I do feel sorry for you. But, shut the fuck up about it already.?

And on: ?Now, I don?t know if you?ve ever done coke; I haven?t done a lot but enough to know I like it?But I know it?s really damn good??

And on: ?Just two things (and one woman) did I love from first sight. One was cigarettes. The other was coke.?

What follows is tedious descriptions of plane flights, baggage terminals, security checkpoints, and even a stopover in Germany to buy a coffee at McDonald?s. The rest of the book can be summarized as follows: Tom finds out that his father is actually Russian and a KGB agent. That this means that he?s Russian too (Tom Jarvis becomes Thomas Arkady Vasilievich Vorontsov). That the KGB controls the American right wing. And, lastly, that the woman he loves and beds is his sister.

Then, in the final chapter, a final, confusing sign-off:

?If you?ve been reading this so far and you still believe that I?m making all this up, you wouldn?t be surprised if I now announced that what you?ve been reading so far is utter bullshit?I can reveal myself as, in truth, a forty seven year old divorcee who earned a doctorate in Creative Writing last year just after ending a seventeen year marriage. But, that would not be true.?

He then signs off with a variation of James Joyce?s ending for Ulysses: ?Paris-Zurich-Trieste, 1914, 1921.?

The only thing I could take from the book is that, as hinted by the Gay Girl blog, MacMaster is desperate to inhabit other lives that are more interesting than his own ? and probably not for reasons related to more authentic fiction writing. Protagonist Tom is fluent in Arabic and moves seamlessly between cultures. He converses with strippers and spies in Russian and French and is loved by Arabs. He feels most at home in war zones and considers himself a Beiruti. He?s a revolutionary genius, but he just wants to get high. He believes River Phoenix (though dead) should be cast as him in a movie. An entire sub-chapter was written in Cyrillic script with no explanation as to what it was about except, ?And it really was like that!?

I was reminded of Hajratwala?s original description of Amina?s memoirs to the NY Times: ?The faked lesbian sex scenes turn my stomach. The narcissistic writing, the sprinkling of quotations from the Koran and tidbits from Syrian history, the stock stories compiled from a thousand news clippings ? it all seems painfully obvious.?

Painfully obvious that Amina was not who she claimed given that the blog was composed of half-truths and sloppy clich?s. As MacMaster peddles his Gay Girl book, he?s sadly reinserting his voice into a sphere where the actual voices of gays, lesbians, and transgendered are consistently shut out. As Daniel Nassar wrote on Gay Middle East, ?You took away my voice, Mr. MacMaster, and the voices of many people who I know...I?m outraged, and if I lived in a country where I can sue you, I would.?

Ruff! Meow! How Many Pets Do You Think Live In Brooklyn Heights ...

With the Brooklyn Heights Association?s annual Dog Show returning to Montague Street Sunday, Sept. 23?part of the BID?s Summer Space?it seems apropos to share info about how much New Yorkers prize their pets. Webbie Puppy Tales featured a ?New York Dog Spotting? post Sunday, with stats from the NYC Economic Development Corp.: As of February 2012, +/-1.1 million pets reside in the city (600,000 dogs, 500,000 cats), with an ownership rate of about one pet for every three households.

The corporation breaks down ownership by region: Downtown Brooklyn, which includes the Heights, is home to between 15,001 & 20,000 pets. The most-populated NYC nabes are the Upper West & East Sides (lining Central Park), Staten Island, Astoria and?for whatever reason?Williamsburg.

Meanwhile, BHA President Judy Stanton shares with BHB readers that the organization will offer registration information and details for the Brooklyn Heights Dog Show soon after Labor Day. She says, ?The idea is to make this homegrown show fun for dogs, their owners and the audience. Any dog who lives in Brooklyn Heights is eligible to enter the show on a first come, first served basis.? Poochie lovers with suggestions for show categories can email info@thebha.org, heading the Subject with ?Dog Show.?

Historic Walking Tour #6: ME Helme House Furnishing Company

The front window of the 1904 M.E. Helme House Furnishing Company antique store hints at the great finds inside. (Photo, May 2012)

?? If you love antiques, then this stop on the walking tour of Historic Downtown Huntington Beach is for you!? It's not only chock full of treasures, the buildings themselves are true gems of Huntington Beach history.

? ?

? ? Part of the Helme-Worthy legacy in Huntington Beach, the M.E. Helme House Furnishing Co. building and adjacent Helme-Worthy residence were listed on the National Historic Register (#86003668) in 1987 and are undergoing loving restoration.

Directions to Walking Tour stop #6: Walk northeast up Main Street (away from the coast) and head left on Walnut Avenue.? Just a few steps down Walnut at Sixth Street sits the faded sky blue wooden, two-story commercial building of Huntington Beach's fourth mayor, Matthew Helme, and the goldenrod-colored Helme-Worthy house.??

Undergoing restoration, but still in business, the M.E. Helme buildng recalls the days of country roads, horse and buggy.? (Photo, May 2012)

?? Notes from the approved application to the National Historic Register (NHR) explain, "these two buildings retain their integrity of location, setting, design, workmanship, materials, feeling and association with Huntington Beach's early settlement period. Although the residence is simple in style, it is the oldest house in town. Both provide the only visual picture of early Huntington Beach and its settlement period."

? The M.E. Helme House Furnishing Company is "the only surviving commercial building with the original Western Falsefront architecture remaining in south and central Orange County."? Helme's furniture company sold practical and decorative furnishings for the growing frontier town.

?? ?? Constructed in 1904, the M.E. Helme House Furnishing Co. building sits adjacent to the 1880s Helme-Worthy residence, also undergoing restoration.? The Helme-Worth residence is well traveled, having been moved by mule team from the rural countryside between Santa Ana and Huntington Beach to its current location in 1903.? It is reported the house was previously owned by Charles Leatherman--who also shared ownership of the present day Longboard Restaurant & Pub at 217 Main Street (the oldest wooden building on Main Street).

Photographs thoughtfully posted by the family in the window of the Helme-Worthy residence document the original condition of the house in the early 1900s. (Photo, May 2012)

In the family

?? One of the happiest aspects of the buildings' current restoration is the fact it is being conducted by the great granddaughter of Matthew Helme, Susie Worthy, and her husband, Guy Guzzardo.? They run the antique store and live at the residence, a true link to the past.

Matthew Helme (center, front row) and the first Huntington Beach city council, then referred to as a board of trustees, circa 1909.? They appear to be keeping a close eye on someone out-of-view.? Left to right: David O. Steward, Ed Manning (Huntington Beach's first mayor), Helme, C.H. Howard, and Charles W. Warner.? (Photo, courtesy of Orange County Archives)

Matthew and Mary Josephine Helme

?? Matthew Helme and his wife, Mary Josephine, were prominent citizens both for bringing the? seaside village's first furniture company and also for Matthew's role in the community's development.??

?? The NHR application explains Helme "fought for incorporation, was elected to the town's first Board of Trustees (city council), worked to get that all-important commodity, water, functioning in a city system, helped to set up a modern fire department, helped set up the city manager system which still prevails, authored an ordinance setting up the sale of the city's first gas bonds, and introduced a substantial street paving and lighting program."

The attractions of Huntington Beach included a new $200,000 water system, oiled streets, and the annual Methodist conference.? In 1905, a lot went for $200 and up, and farm acreage anywhere from $100 to $500 an acre depending on the location.? (Image, Los Angeles Herald, May 21, 1905)

?? Helme was elected to the first board of trustees in a hastily organized write-in ballot election.? By the time of the elections of 1912 and 1916, Huntington Beach had fancy printed ballots and Helme was the highest vote getter.? His fellow trustees made him mayor in 1916.? Due to his efforts, "gas street lights were placed along Main Street to the city limits. That stretch of street was paved, as was Ocean Avenue from First Street to Twenty-third Street.? This act recognized the change in methods of transportation from street car, train, and buggy to automobile."

?? Helme's daughter, Amy, married Lawrence "Boots" Worthy in 1916, eventually making the Helme-Worthy house their home 1924.

?? The Tent City Company leased about 13 acres at the Methodist auditorium and grounds, Pecan and 12th Street, to host tent revivals, large groups and the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

Huntington Beach organizers had to order 100 more tents to add to the existing 250 and accommodate Civil War veterans who arrived at the annual encampment in 1910.? A group of 4,000 gathered in the Methodist auditorium to hear keynote speakers. (Image, Los Angeles Herald, August 20, 1910)

?? No small campsite, the early 1900s civil war veteran gatherings brought thousands to Huntington Beach.? The Los Angeles Herald reported the Tent City hosted a dance floor, fire pits, veteran speakers on topics such as "Prison life at Andersonville," and "heated prisoners of war meetings."? The 1910 encampment also featured a "sunbonnet drill" by "the ladies from the 'fruit and flower' city (Pomona)."

?? Bringing thousands of new visitors to camp at Huntington Beach, Helme both helped establish the makings of a town and continued to help put the young city on the map.

The historic Helme-Worthy complex comprises 513-515-517-519 Walnut Street and 128 Sixth Street in downtown Huntington Beach.? Stop at the M.E. Helme House Furnishing Co. antique store at 517 Walnut Street and meet one of our pioneer families. (Photo, May 2012)

Why You Should Make Your First BBQ Grill a Gas ... - Food and Drinks

BBQ has been around as long as man has. The first people on the planet soon understood that dinner tasted much better after a brief seer on an open fire.

In more recent history, barbequing has become a family tradition. Although the majority of families in America own a bbq grill, only a few view barbecuing as a sport or pastime. The majority see it as just another way to cook dinner ? one that Dad can actually do.

That?s a pity, considering that grilling and barbequing can be so much more than just burning a perfect piece of meat. But it all starts with choosing the right barbeque grill.

The Best Barbecue Grill for the Beginner to Use

There are various styles of grills with a multitude of options and features. And frequently it will be overwhelming for beginners to wade through every one of these possibilities.

Allow me to cut through the jumble for you.

You ought to keep in mind 2 factors.

1. The Grill

The easiest barbecue grill to use is undoubtedly the natural gas barbeque grill. Natural gas barbeque grills are made to hook directly into your home?s natural gas line, doing away with the need to provide a separate fuel source. This gets rid of the need to replenish charcoal or fill up gas bottles.

Another benefit of having a natural gas barbeque grill is the capability to regulate the heat of the fire. Until you have experience with creating a two or three zone fire, the different burner settings on natural gas barbecue grills make it easier to produce different temperatures for the individual cooking spots on the barbecue grill.

Natural gas barbecues are the easiest model of grill to clean. With other grills including charcoal and smoker grills, you have to remove the wood and also charcoal briquettes each and every time. Natural gas grills simply have to be wiped out. Some natural gas grills also offer a none-stick feature.

2. Your Options and Extras

You will be overwhelmed by the number and also variety of gadgets for every natural gas grill. Allow me to share a very simple rule to remember that will make picking drop dead easy.

Don?t get any.

Alright, you may get a warming rack. That?s more of a must than accessory, at any rate. But nothing else. No rotisserie. Certainly no Wok type surface. No added grates or racks. Zero.

Not until you have taken your brand new grill home and used it for a little bit. Give it a decent workout with some uncomplicated grilling ? for example chicken or pork chops ? then decide what you need or want to enhance your grilling enjoyment.

Try this and you will probably save money and get what you want.

Anti-Japan protesters march in Chinese city

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of an eastern Chinese city on Saturday to demonstrate against Japan's claims to a disputed island chain, state media reported.

The latest rally came after anti-Japan protests broke out in more than a dozen Chinese cities including Beijing and Hong Kong the previous weekend.

Demonstrators gathered on Saturday in the port city of Rizhao, in Shandong province, and marched towards the city government office with the crowd swelling to more than 400 people, the official Xinhua news agency said.

They carried banners with slogans including "Japanese get out of the Diaoyu Islands", the report said, adding that four people stood atop a sport utility vehicle and raised a Chinese flag.

The small, uninhabited islands located in the East China Sea are known in China as Diaoyu and in Japan as Senkaku. Japan controls them, though China and Taiwan also claim ownership.

The dispute has been around for decades and periodically flares up. Earlier this month, passions rose when pro-China activists from Hong Kong sailed to the islands and some landed. Japan took 14 people into custody and expelled them.

Shortly after, a group of Japanese activists sailed to the islands and also landed, sparking diplomatic protests by the Chinese and Taiwan governments and the angry street demonstrations last weekend in Chinese cities.

Saturday's demonstration came a day after lawmakers in Japan's lower house of parliament adopted a resolution condemning the visit to the islands by the pro-Beijing activists.

China's foreign ministry on Friday again issued a statement criticising Japan's stance on the row and reiterating its view that that the islands belong to China.

Canon EOS-1D X field review

DNP Canon EOS1D X field review

Just before Halloween in 2009, Canon announced its most powerful DSLR to date. The $5,000 full-frame EOS-1D Mark IV was the company's answer to Nikon's market-leading D3S, which rang in just shy of $5,200. On the basis of price alone, Canon won that round. Then, after two years of silence, the company launched its new flagship, the 1D X. The date was October 18th, 2011 -- roughly 10 (or "X") years after the very first model in the series was announced, way back in 2001. A decade ago, Canon priced that introductory 1D at $5,500 -- a princely sum considering the 4.15-megapixel CCD on board. Now, the 1D X, which is arguably the most powerful sub-five-figure camera available, commands 6,799 of your hard-earned dollars, or $800 more than the D4, Nikon's $6,000 equivalent. All this talk of price may seem to skirt the camera's long list of lust-worthy features, but when the cost of any piece of hardware approaches a year's tuition at a public university, a purchase decision deserves thorough consideration.

A camera in this league is absolutely to be used as a professional tool. And while deep-pocketed amateurs may pick one up -- in the way folks with cash to burn may build a collection of overpowered two-seaters -- the vast majority will live in $30,000-plus kits, where they'll reach six-figure shutter counts, and will likely change hands several times before their eventual retirement. Right now, you're probably researching the 1D X as exhaustively as you would a new car -- in fact, you may have even lined up a test drive, through the company's Canon Professional Services group. Many months after it was first announced, we've had an opportunity to take the new eXtreme model for a spin ourselves, and it's every bit as impressive as its price tag suggests. Canon's top model isn't any smaller or lighter than its predecessors, the 1D Mark IV or 1Ds Mark III -- but is all that bulk justified, despite strong contenders like the workhorse 5D? Buckle up and join us in the field (ahem, after the break) to find out.

Body of Japanese reporter killed in Syria flown home

The body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed while covering the anti-regime movement in Syria's second city was flown home on Saturday.

Mika Yamamoto apparently came under fire Monday from pro-government troops in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fighting erupted there last month, according to her long-time colleague Kazutaka Sato.

"I am sorry to say that I cannot find words about the fact that I have her come back this way," an emotional Sato told a news conference at Tokyo's Narita airport.

"I think she has really worked hard. You have really worked hard. That's what I want to tell her now" added Sato, her colleague from the small but respected Japan Press.

Yamamoto, 45, is the fourth foreign journalist to have been killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo. She had covered several armed conflicts, including those in Afghanistan and Iraq with Sato.

Yamamoto was a known face on Japanese television, who came to prominence after surviving a US tank shelling on the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad in 2003 in which two journalists, one from Reuters and one from a Spanish broadcaster, were killed.

Her body was flown from Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines plane, accompanied by Sato and two of Yamamoto's sisters.

A dozen of the plane's crew and airport workers offered a silent prayer after the coffin carrying her body was lowered on to the tarmac.

Her body was to be carried to her home in Tokyo and autopsied by police to determine whether she was deliberately targeted, media reports said.

"I want to come close to the truth about how she died," said Sato. "She was tender and had a strong sense of justice. She was straight and hot blooded."
