"Painting Hope" For Families Fighting Pediatric Cancer

Tonight's First Friday Art Walk in Springfield will include a moving tribute to families fighting pediatric cancer.? 30 paintings done by local kids will be auctioned off at the Obelisk Home gallery.? The project is called "Painting Hope with Gavyn Sky."? Sky is a Springfield artist who came up with the idea in 2011 to give kids with cancer a special activity to do with their siblings and parents.

The display features a painting called "Lego Space" done by 3-year-old Landan Bland who died last week of brain cancer.? His 2-year-old sister Ellie also made a floral piece.? The artwork is canvass stretched on hardwood with a custom acrylic medium that creates a crackling texture.

Tonight's event is free and starts at 5:30 at Obelisk Home.? The gallery is located at 214 W. Phelps in The Inspired Commerce Building. Visitors will enjoy wine, music and food catered by Touch Restaurant.

Bidding on each piece starts at $500. Donations of any amount can be made toward the Bland children paintings.? The goal is to give the 2 pieces back to Landan's parents.? 100% of the proceeds will be go to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis and Springfield's Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center.
