The Truth behind Detox | Fitness Sutra

The Truth behind Detox

There are many detox stores that are mushrooming everywhere promoting a brand of healthy living and nutrition through a blend of shakes made up of fruits and vegetables. It claims to remove toxins from the body, promote weight loss and keep you away from sickness. The stores usually provide shakes that are made from fruits and vegetables and are to be consumed daily for a set period of time. Upon consuming the shakes, most people experience a slight diarrhea the next day which many claim to be a sign of detoxification and ultimately leads to weight loss, which is the goal for many. But do these detoxification programs actually work?

Removes toxins from the body

Technically speaking, your body is built to remove toxins naturally. If it didn?t, you probably wouldn?t survive past reading this post. The liver, the kidneys, intestinal tracts and skin are the four major organs involved in removing harmful toxins from our bodies. So it doesn?t really matter whether you?re consuming these shakes or not, your body is already at work in removing these toxins from your body.

It?s like driving a car which has four wheels but insisting that you add another wheel so that the car moves better. Well, you could add the extra wheel. No harm but why bother if there is an effective system in place to move the car? In the same way, with a system in place to remove toxins from your body, I don?t see the value of purchasing expensive shakes to do something that my body already does effectively and naturally!

Promotes Weight Loss

If you go on a diet of a shake made from fruits and vegetables in place of whatever junk food that you?re currently consuming, you will lose weight just on?the basis of calorie count. In terms of weight loss, it?s a no-brainer! You will lose weight once you go on this detoxification program! The big question is how long can you sustain on the diet? The moment you get back on a regular diet, rest assured that the pounds you once shed will return back to you once again in its full glory if you haven?t been exercising.

When you go on a calorie deficit like that without exercise, your body?s metabolism rate slows down to compensate for the lack of calories consumed. The moment you get back on a regular diet, you pack on the pounds very quickly because you?re now over-feeding yourself and the extra calories is stored as fat.

Furthermore, when you get on a detoxification program, what are you actually losing? Initially, you are merely losing water. So if your program lasts for three days, you are only losing water and not fat, in that period. The lack of protein in the diet will also result in the loss of muscle mass in the long run, which will result in the loss of strength and overall metabolism.

Prevents sicknesses

If you haven?t been consuming your greens and fruits, you will lack the vitamins and minerals needed to combat sicknesses and diseases related to nutrition. Consuming these shakes will definitely be helpful in boosting your immune system that is deprived from all the essential vitamins and mineral needed for healthy living. If you are already consuming adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals, consuming these shakes will not result in any harm but then again, what is the value of spending hundreds of dollars for something that you can whip up in the comfort of your own home?

The bottom line is that these detoxification shakes aren?t harmful albeit hard to swallow, they are healthy! They are made up of fruits and vegetables after all. However, it boils down to the question of convenience and value for money in this case. There are plenty of detox recipes available online so if you want to DIY, you always can give it a try!
